Through digital microscope, a user can view the magnified image captured by it and store it on the hard disk of a computer. It has a built in CCD Chip Camera. It consists of bulbs, condensers, filters, heads, holders, slides, stages and stands. The bulb, which is either halogen or tungsten is used to illuminate a specimen and can be adjusted for brightness. The function of microscope condenser is to focus the light onto the specimen. Different types of condensers are available in the market. The eyepieces form that image which a user sees. This image is a secondary image of the image formed by the objective lenses of the microscope. Some eyepieces give large field of view and some narrow. Field of view is the area seen by a user through the eyepiece. Microscope stage is a flat and black colored table where a slide is held by the user.
If you don't wish to buy a digital microscope then you can simply convert a compound microscope into digital one. To do this, buy a digital camera (which is designed to work with a microscope) and then cover the eyepiece of the compound microscope with it. If you wish to use a digital microscope then you will have to install its software and the device driver program on the attached computer. Through the software, the captured images can be re-sized or edited and then can be used for research or educational work. The images can also be displayed in a class on an interactive whiteboard through a LCD projector or through plasma/ LCD screen for making classroom learning more interactive. You will also have to buy certain accessories like eye cups, macro tubes, carry case, tripods, dust covers etc to use with the microscope.
